Asheville NOT A Top Veggie City?

Posted by Shannon On August - 10 - 2010

PETA, The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals has named their top ten vegetarian/vegan cities. Those cities are Albuquerque, Washington D.C, Portland, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Olympia. So, where is Asheville, North Carolina? It is found no where on PETA’s list, not even on the smaller city list.

I see this as an oversight on the organization’s part. Asheville is quite a veggie-friendly city. The Paris of the South understands it’s vegan and vegetarian residents and visitors. You can go into almost any eatery in the town and get a veggie friendly meal. The people of Asheville actually know the meaning of a vegan, unlike folks in Central Florida.

Also, most of the food served in Asheville’s restaurants is local, coming right from farms and growers practically down the street. The mountain town prides itself on organic local fare. Just look at the window to any downtown cafe or shop, “Love Asheville. Put your money where your heart is. Buy Local.” Asheville truly is a top veggie city in my book.

Judge Rules Red Light Cameras Violate State Law

Posted by Shannon On August - 9 - 2010

An Orlando judge ruled today that the city’s use of automated red light cameras to catch red light runners is a violation of state law. The state of Florida alone can make the determination on the usage of red light cameras per Orlando Circuit Judge Lauten. This means that thousands of drivers may be able to claim a refund if they were issued a ticket because of a red light camera.

Personally, I’m not against the use of red light cameras to catch those drivers that speed through red lights. It is not only a violation of the law, but it is dangerous. Many people have been injured or have died from crashes due to red light runners. It seems to me that this issue will end up going before the state very soon. I’m sure the Orlando city officials will be bringing it to Tallahassee for a higher ruling. This could cause the cameras to go up not just in Orlando, but in any city that requests them in the state if passed.

What are your thoughts on red light cameras? What do you think about the Circuit Judge’s ruling on the matter?

Do you believe?

Posted by Shannon On May - 4 - 2010

From the Associated Press:
A SkyWest Airlines flight from Helena, Mont., to Salt Lake City was diverted to Idaho Falls after a passenger began banging on the cockpit door, saying he was a space alien and wanted to fly the plane.

This is the greatest true news story I’ve heard in awhile. Makes you want to call up the FBI and page Agent Mulder to get on the case right away. How mentally ill does someone have to be to really believe that number one, they are not human and instead are an alien. Two, that they would not have garnered some sort of attention earlier on by people in the airport like security at the airport itself? I suppose that the guy might have had some sort of reaction to the elevation levels or something once the plane was flying. That or his medication wore off mid-flight. But, just to consider all sides or what have you of this story, what if this Las Vegas man truly *is* an alien? What if there really are aliens living here amongst us? As Agent Mulder would say, “Do you believe in the existence of extraterrestrials?”

Hey look, it's another blog!

Posted by Shannon Chenoweth On August - 8 - 2008

While I have had, and still do have my blog on blogger, this is going to be the new locale for project and writing updates and what have you.

After having an insane last few months and finally escaping the state of the Mouse, my writing and life is beginning a new chapter.  In short, I feel invigorated.  :)

In a little more detail for those whose interest is piqued, I lived in Florida most of my life. While I was born in Long Island, New York, I grew up in the Sunshine State. That’s not necesssarily out of choice mind you, when you’re a kid you just do as your parents tell you and go with the flow of the mighty river.  So, after living down in Florida for so long, I started yearning to move out. Finally, that happened this past June and I moved up here to North Carolina after falling in love with Asheville during my visit in April.

So, stay tuned to this address on the www for all sorts of stuff soon!
